From the Field, Oil on canvas by Lydia Johnston

Lydia Johnston

Saturday August 20, 2011 : 1- 5 pm

Come see some of Lydia's new series of vertical flower paintings, full of rich, vibrant colors and lots of energy. Each painting has underlying vertical and horizontal panels of color over which a vase with flowers is interwoven.

"Color is my passion. When you look at one of my paintings, I want you to sink into it and be transported. My paintings have mystery, they allude to the familiar while remaining wholly ambiguous. By hinting at things, I hope to trigger your imagination. I want you to keep coming back to take another look."

Lydia Johnston has lived and worked in southern Vermont for the past thirty-one years. Much of her inspiration comes from the gardens and meadows surrounding her home. Her oil paintings are impressionistic. Her process involves laying down many layers of oil paint, and using tools to move the paint around, exposing the underlayers. Her work has been exhibited throughout the country and hangs in many private collections.

Paula Stern

Saturday August 13, 2011 : 1-4 pm

Sculptor Paula Stern works primarily at her country home in the Berkshire Hills. Her subject matter, figures, busts and groups, reflect her deep appreciation for the beauty of human anatomy and complexity of relationships. Creating portraits of adults and children, she often uses a sequence of sculptures to chronicle human lives and family groups like chapters of a biography.

Prominent journalists, lawyers and government officials, including a United Stales federal court judge, have commissioned Stern to sculpt their portrait busts as well as figures and busts of their loved ones. Her sculptures are found in some of the finest homes and gardens in the United States and overseas. Several are on display in the Residence and Embassy of the United Slates of America in Nicosia, Cyprus as part of the Art in the Embassies Program sponsored by the US Department of State. Stern works in clay and wax, and her bronze works are cast at a fine arts foundry in the Berkshires. (More ...)

Amourous Amarillis - watercolor by Ellen kaiden 50 x 40

Ellen Kaiden: New Watercolors

Saturday and Sunday August 6 - 7, 2011 - 1-4 PM

"I am drawn to watercolor as a medium because it is spontaneous and uncontrollable. The thought that you can capture motion and color in water adds to the medium's excitement. My paintings are full of life and movement; they have an architectural but vitreous quality. Every time I pick a subject to paint, I enjoy finding its form and ultimately its sensuality."

Ellen attended Philadelphia College of Art and studied painting with Will Barnet. Additional education included private study with Herbie Rose in Sarasota, Florida and Johanna Salomon in Bergen County, New Jersey. Ellen also has studied at Beaux Arts, Paris, France, the Interlaken School in Lenox, Massachusetts, and the Art Students League and the New School in NYC.  She  is a full time painter, with studios in Sarasota, Florida and the Berkshires, and a Gallery Artist at The Lenox Gallery.

Stephen Filmus

Saturday, July 16, 1011 - 1-5 pm

In this exhibit, Stephen Filmus shifts from his more recent landscapes to one he favored years ago - Still-Life. Both subjects appeal to Filmus and challenge him in different ways. The Landscape presents a complex world which must be simplified, dramatized and composed to capture the essence of the scene, while the Still-Life is designed with ordinary objects in a studied arrangement which ideally is presented with a sense of randomness. The two genres inform and enrich each other.

Filmus has lived and worked in the Berkshires for many years where he has established his reputation and following. He has exhibited at the Berkshire Museum, Norman Rockwell Museum and David Findlay Jr.Fine Art in New York. His work is in numerous private and public collections.

Filmus paints still-lifes and landscapes that reflect his artistic sensibilities, but also works on commissions for those who want a painting of a specific scene or a composition of favorite objects. He develops an artwork that satisfies the integrity of his style while creating an image that his clients envision.
